2 charged in Milford in connection with illegal weapons

Two Milford men have been arrested in the last week for allegedly violating court orders barring them from owning guns.

Cameron W. Smith, 21, was arrested March 1 after the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alerted police that he provided false information on federal forms while attempting to purchase a 20-guage shotgun from a Walmart on Jan. 26, according to Milford Police Department spokesman Detective Dwight Young.

Smith is prohibited from owning a firearm due to an active protection from abuse order against him, Young said.

Details about the court order were not immediately available.

Smith is charged with attempted possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and violation of a PFA order.

He is being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown in default of a $12,500 cash bond.

Four days after Smith’s arrest, police reportedly discovered multiple firearms in the home of Wayne E. Gainer, a 49-year-old resident of the 900 block of North Church Street.

Gainer is prohibited from owning any firearms or ammunition as a result of a prior violent felony conviction, Young said.

Details about that conviction were not immediately available.

Gainer is charged with six counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

He is being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution in default of an $18,000 secured bond.
