A 37-year-old truck driver was killed Thursday in a single-vehicle crash on Beach Highway near Ellendale.
Kenneth W. Johnson was driving a 2003 Mack rollback truck that was towing a 30-yard trailer containing scrap metal on westbound Beach Highway when he lost control of the vehicle about 1 p.m., according to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day.
The truck left the north side of the highway, west of North Union Church Road, before striking several trees and a utility pole, Day said.
At some point during the crash, the trailer, which was secured only to the truck’s winch, struck the passenger’s compartment of the truck.
The truck eventually came to rest about 40 feet from the roadway.
Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, Day said.
The highway between North Union Church and Truitt roads was closed for nearly five hours as police investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, Day said.
