  • Samuel C. Johnson, 72, of Milford, DE, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Milford Memorial Hospital. Sam was born in Milford, the son of the late Samuel L. and Elizabeth M. (Parvis) Johnson, and was the stepson of the late Gertrude Johnson.
He spent his childhood years growing up in Harrington and Houston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in Morocco for 18 months before being assigned to the Naval Security Station in Washington, DC for the duration of his tour, leaving as an E-5. Sam worked as an insurance adjuster for Selected Risk Insurance Company, located in Georgetown, where he served families and businesses for 23 years. After leaving Selected Risk Insurance, he worked for two independent insurance companies.
Sam was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Milford, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men; served on the City of Milford Planning and Zoning Commission, the City of Milford Board of Adjustments, from which he recently resigned due to his health in October; and was a member of the Delmarva Claims Association for many years. He was an active member and Past Master (2004) of Temple Lodge No. 9 AF & AM in Milford. Sam enjoyed volunteering at the Milford Center, sharing his many hobbies and interests with the men's group. He was a gifted singer with a beautiful Irish tenor voice. He was a past member of the Calvary Church Choir, and while stationed in the Navy, in the Great Lakes Region, he was privileged to sing as a member of the U.S. Navy Blue Jackets Choir. He loved singing solos, singing at many weddings and he had the opportunity to sing at the Henlopen Hotel in Rehoboth Beach; but especially enjoyed singing with his sister Sharon, and in the Irish pubs on a special trip to Ireland. He loved traveling, hunting, camping, fishing, photography, boating and model trains. Most of all, he loved his family, with his wife Grace being his sweetheart since high school. In addition to his parents and stepmother, Sam was preceded in death by his loving grandparents Samuel C. and Emma Johnson, who lovingly helped raise him.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Grace M. (Lofland) Johnson; two daughters Annette J. Miller and her husband Dean; and Deborah J. Kresse and her husband Brian; all of Milford; grandchildren Christopher and Gary Miller and Brianna Grace Kresse; all of Milford; one sister Sharon Pingue and her husband Charles, of Glenside, PA; his aunt Phyllis Morton, of Milford; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, as well as, many friends.
Family and friends may call from 12 - 2 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 S. E. Front Street, Milford, where funeral services, including a masonic service, will begin at 2 pm. Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Rt. 113, Milford.
