Senior Jessica Downes has been a member of the Milford varsity swim team for four years. Like the rest of her teammates, she considers swimming challenging and enjoyable. Practice, she said, can be very tough, but also worth all the time and effort to achieve her athletic goals.
“Practices can be very tough, but it’s all about how you push yourself. It’s true that what your get out of it is what you put into it,” she said. Downes added that she tries to work hard every practice so that she can improve on her times in the several events in which she participates. Those include the 100 Meter Backstroke and the relay races.
Downes plans to attend either the University of Pennsylvania or the University of Delaware this fall after graduating from Milford, a place she said she enjoys. Right now, she plans on studying neuroscience, an intriguing discipline that may lead her to a fascinating career in medicine or the sciences.
In the meantime, she has one specific goal in mind. “Last year I qualified for the state tournament, so right now I’m hoping to qualify again and improve my times from last season,” she said. Like the rest of her teammates, Downes said she enjoys the competition, but she also enjoys the friendships she has developed while a member of the Milford varsity swim team.
