  • The Milford Lady Buccaneers totally dominated Middletown High School 68-21 Thursday afternoon in the opening day of the Pat Borowski Classic girls basketball tournament at Lake Forest High School.
The Bucs seemed 100 percent totally prepared and led 18-0 in the first quarter before the crowd had even settled. The team played good, solid, fundamental basketball for 32 minutes. Milford was led on the court by junior guard Myleiris Vazquez, who had 13 points at halftime.
Milford coach Leona White said she was pleased with her entire team's effort.
"We played a very good basketball today. We pressed very well, controlled the tempo and were able to control both the offensive and defensive boards this afternoon. You don't often have such a near perfect game from everyone on the squad," said White.
The offense kept up the barrage throughout the first quarter and led 28-0 after the first break. The defense did a great job preventing the Lady Cavaliers from taking uncontested shots. In fact, the Cavs' didn't get their first basket until the 3:26 mark of the second period by Brittney Talib. By halftime though, the game was already a rout at 41-5.
Middletown found a bit of scoring touch midway through the third quarter, but still trailed 65-14. In the fourth quarter, White cleared her bench and the game slowed down considerably, resulting in the final score of 68-21.
"We had a great team effort today and we all played very well," said Vazquez after the game. Vazquez led all scorers with 19 points. She was helped by Xitlali Roman with 14, Shaniya Adkins with 10 and Diamon Turner with 8 points.
Middletown's Allison Schwandt led the Cavaliers with 8 points, Prestina Lanier added five and Brittany Talib and Alicia Brinson each had four points in the losing effort.
