It was a game that neither team wanted to lose, but in the end, one team came out victorious and the other had to face an agonizing defeat. In the end, the Milford Buccaneers worked hard to achieve their first victory of the 2012 campaign, but came up short in a 63-60 loss to Cape Henlopen Tuesday night on their home court.
The Buccaneers started a little slow due to the Cape Henlopen defense, scoring only 5 points in the first quarter and trailed by three. In the second quarter, the offense came alive behind the hot shooting of sophomore Shymer Hanzer who netted 11 points before the break. In addition, junior Tikeace Harris added 6 and senior Eric Jensen had 5 points. The 20 point offensive output helped the home team build a 25-21 lead, and helped boost the team's confidence. "We definitely felt good about the effort at the end of the first half, but we knew we had to work harder in the second half," said Hanzer.
Milford's offense was less productive in the third quarter as Cape's offense moved into high gear, and the Vikings' defense did a better job in containing the Bucs' guards. It wasn't a matter of Milford not working hard, it was a matter of fine play by Cape. After three, the Bucs found themselves down 42-39, but definitely in striking distance for that elusive first victory.
In the fourth period, Milford ramped up the offense and matched Cape point for point, but fell short at the final buzzer.
"We were fortunate to come out with the victory tonight. Milford played very well most of the game, and it won't be long before they win their first game and many more," said Cape Henlopen coach Stephen Re.
Milford's Harris led all scorers with 22 points including 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. He was helped by Hanzer with 14, Shakur Manzo with 13 and Jason Parker with 9 points. The 0-5 Bucs will next play on Friday, December 28 against Westminster (MD) HS at 3 p.m. at the Wicomico Civic Center in the Governor's Challenge. The Vikings were led in scoring by junior guard Tyreik Burton who totaled 18 points, while Tony Hazzard had 14 points and Jon Warren totaled 10 pints in the winning effort.
Cape is now 4-1. Their next contest is at home against Arundel (MD) HS on Friday, December 21 at 6:30 p.m.
