  • Police were alerted to a reckless driver on Bay Road near Frederica on Wednesday, but could not stop the man before he caused a crash that injured a Felton woman and her grandson.
Emergency dispatchers received a report of a 2002 Honda Odyssey swerving across the lanes of southbound Bay Road, near the twin bridges that cross the Murderkill River east of Frederica, just minutes before the minivan slammed into a 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara carrying a 55-year-old Felton woman and her 9-year-old grandson, according to a Delaware State Police spokesman.
Police said the Suzuki was stopped in the crossover, waiting to turn onto northbound South Frederica Road about 7:50 p.m. when the minivan, driven by 30-year-old Milton resident Michael N. Lopez, swerved onto the grass median and into the passenger side of the SUV.
The impact spun the SUV and pushed it partially into the left lane of Bay Road.
The driver, Debra J. Williams, and her grandson were later taken to Milford Memorial Hospital, where they both were treated for non-life-threatening wounds, police said.
Lopez, who was not injured in the crash, attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped by troopers about a quarter-mile away on South Frederica Road, police said.
He is charged with driving under the influence of drugs, driving on a suspended or revoked license, two counts of vehicular assault and possession of 3.2 grams of marijuana.
He later was released after posting a $5,000 secured bail.
