A 35-year-old Ellendale man had to be freed from the box truck he was driving, after the vehicle struck a tractor-trailer and a concrete median near St. Georges on Thusday.
Joseph B. Shreves was flown to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center, where he was treated and released for injuries to his lower extremities, police said.
A Delaware State Police spokesman said the crash occurred on northbound Del. Route 1, just south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge, about 9:17 p.m. when Shreves' 2006 Chevrolet box truck rear-ended a tractor-trailer that had just merged onto the highway.
The impact caused the box truck to cross the center and left lanes of the highway before striking the concrete median of the bridge, also known as Sen. William V. Roth Jr. Bridge.
It took emergency responders from the Delaware City Fire Company about 40 minutes to extricate Shreves from the truck, according to a spokesman for the New Castle County Paramedics.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 60-year-old Virginia resident Elving A. Hinojosa, was not injured and managed to safely stop his vehicle on the right shoulder of the bridge.
Shreves later was cited for inattentive driving.
Several lanes of northbound Route 1 were closed for about three hours as police investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
