  • Smyrna Town Hall open tomorrow, council meeting canceled

  • As Hurricane Sandy, still categorized as a Category 1 hurricane, nears closer, local officials continue to make up-to-date decisions regarding Delaware towns.
    Gov. Jack Markell declared a limited state of emergency and ordered mandatory evacuation of coastal areas by tonight at 8 p.m. Woodland Beach is among the coastal areas ordered a mandatory evacuation.
    National Guard and EME resources along with Delaware State Police will be deployed to Citizens' Hose Company in Smyrna today. Smyrna Middle School is open as a shelter, and is pet friendly.The middle school is located on Duck Creek Parkway next to Smyrna High School.

    Residents going to the Red Cross shelters are asked to bring adequate supplies, said Gary L. Laing, community relations coordinator for DEMA.
    Laing said many of these supplies are necessary for individual use and some are items that will make the stay more comfortable. The items include bedding (sheets, blankets, and pillows), special needs foods and snacks, important documents such as medical records and birth certificates, personal hygiene items, medications, and games to occupy children.
    When pets are brought, the owners should provide the following: medical records, vaccination history, medications, current photographs, vet phone number, documentation of behavior problems, alternate contact information, first aid kit, leashes, collars and harnesses with identification tags, a pet carrier for each animal, food and water bowls, litter pans for cats, food and water for at least seven days, toys, and blankets.

    Lake Como has been lowered about a foot and will be monitored. Under a limited state of emergency, Town Hall will be open Monday as usual with liberal leave. The town will decide during the day about early dismissal.
    The Special Council meeting scheduled for Monday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. on the 2013 budget has been canceled; it will be rescheduled once the storm passes.
    Smyrna School District schools are closed Monday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 29.
