MPD offers tips for safe trick-or-treating on Halloween

Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year for children, but it also can be one of the most dangerous.

According to Safe Kids USA, twice as many child pedestrians are killed by motor vehicles on Oct. 31 than at any other time of the year.

The Milford Police Department offered the following tips for safe trick-or-treating from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween.

Pedestrians:

Wear bright and reflective material

Use flashlights and glowsticks

Walk, don’t run

Only visit streets and sidewalks that are well-lit

Use well-lit crosswalks to cross the street when necessary

Watch for vehicles in driveways, as well as on the road

Remember that bad weather decreases visibility for motorists

Inspect costumes to ensure vision is not obstructed

Motorists:

Drive slowly

Watch for children

Use caution when entering or exiting driveways

Pay close attention for children between parked vehicles

Don’t pass stopped vehicles

Always use your turn signal and hazard lights when dropping off children

Use headlights at all times, even before dark

Do not use electronic devices like cell phones when driving
