  • Libertarian Gordon Smith quoted Italian Niccolo Machiavelli when asked about his bid to unseat State Rep. Bobby Outten (R-Felton) in the 30th District of the Delaware House of Representatives.
"In the words of Machiavelli, 'I'm not interested in preserving the status quo; I want to overthrow it,'" Smith said. "I will not go to Legislative Hall for good ol' boy back slapping sessions nor to play footsies with my counterparts. I will represent all my constituents and not just a select few."
Outten, who was unopposed in his bid for re-election in 2010, could not be reached for comment for this story.
Smith, meanwhile, said he decided to run in part because of what he described not just as apathy on the part of his elected officials, but constituents as a whole.
"We as constituents have been pre conditioned to believe our only duty is to vote and then let the bastards run the show whether it be Capitol Hill or Legislative Hall," Smith said. "Can we now see where this has gotten us?
"At the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, while leaving Independence Hall, Benjamin Franklin was asked, what did we now have, a Republic or a Monarchy? Mr. Franklin replied , 'A Republic if you can keep it.' The same rings true for us today."
Smith said he would actively promote greater constituent involvement in all facets of the Legislative process, would promote more formal Town Hall meetings and would open public hearings that garnered the energy and ideas from his constituents.
Smith said Outten, the Republican incumbent, was beatable given his limited scope as a state legislator.
"He's a big outdoorsman and a strong firearm proponent," Smith said. "So am I.
But, there are so many other issues that he ignores, opting instead for the easier 'don't rock the boat approach.'"
