Falling behind by a large first-half margin, the Milford High School team could not put together a strong enough second-half resistence as it lost its first game of the season, falling to Sussex Tech High School, 51-21, Sept. 21 at Sussex Tech.
Tech (2-1, 1-0) stormed out of the gates to take a commanding 23-0 lead heading into halftime, one that the Bucaneers (2-1, 0-1) had trouble overcoming despite scoring 21 points in the final 24 minutes.
Throughout the evening, Milford struggled to make tackles in the run game, allowing a series of big plays that kept momentum squarely on the Ravens shoulders through the duration of the game.
After a poor first half, in which the Bucs allowed a safety and three rushing scores, the team came out firing on all cylinders in the opening drive of the second half, cutting the lead to 23-7 in a drive-ending five-yard touchdown run by junior running back Geophte Augustin.
That momentum was quickly haulted, however, as the Ravens returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, stretching the lead again to 23 points.
Less than two minutes later, Milford senior quaterback Nicholas Jefferson ran in another touchdown from three yards out, but that was the closest the Bucs would get as the Ravens answered with two scores of their own.
Down 44-14 heading into the fourth quarter, Milford gave a comeback one last shot when Jefferson connected with junior wide receiver Octavian Wilson for a 48-yard touchdown. That, however, would be the final points the Bucs would put up as Tech would score one more unanswered TD.
Milford will look to get its defense back in tact and return to its winning ways next week when it hosts another Henlopen Conference North team in Sussex Central High School (2-1, 0-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28.
