A 34-year-old Magnolia man was charged with attempted murder Wednesday after allegedly assaulting and threatening the life of his girlfriend.

According to state police, Robert J. Valencia and his 40-year-old girlfriend got into an argument Wednesday morning after the woman said she wanted to end the relationship.

The argument eventually turned physical with Valencia waving a knife at the woman before pushing her down a flight of stairs at a home in the 800 block of Millchop Lane, west of Magnolia, police said.

Valencia followed the woman into the basement where he reportedly choked her and told her that he was going to kill her.

Valencia called 911 at about 9:07 a.m. to report that his girlfriend had fallen down some stairs, police said.

Valencia then rode in the ambulance that transported the woman to Kent General Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition as of Wednesday night, police said.

Staff at the hospital later asked state police to investigate the incident due to the severity of the woman’s injuries.

Valencia later was charged with first-degree attempted murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

He is being held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna on a $150,000 cash bond, police said.
