St. Mark's defeated Milford 4-2 to win the 2012 DIAA state baseball championship on Tuesday at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Del.
St. Mark's freshmen Will Phillips pitched a complete game, striking out 7 for the win.
The Bucs struck first with runs in the second and third innings to put Milford up 2-0 early.
St. Mark's would get on the board in the bottom half of the third on a Nick Trimarco RBI single.
The score would stay at 2-1 until the 5th inning. Phillips buckled down and retired three straight Bucs in the top of the 5th after allowing the first to batters of the inning to reach base safely. The bullet had been dodged, now it was time for the Spartan's bats to make some noise of their own.
St. Mark's would score three runs in the bottom of the 5th, on and RBI double by Trimarco and two RBI singles by Phillips and Sam Rogers. The Bucs would respond in the very next inning, Chris Huk singled home David Michael to bring Milford to within a run.
The Bucs would get the tying run on base in the top of the 7th but Phillips would retire Cesar Vazquez, Nathan Poore and finally Jason Parker to solidify the win and a championship for the Spartans.
