A Milford man’s four-hour standoff with police ended Saturday night with him being stunned with a Taser.

Milford Police said they responded to a residence in the unit block of West Clarke Avenue at approximately 7:30 p.m. after receiving a complaint that a disorderly person had broken into someone’s room and damaged property.

Drue Ryans, 43, barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom and claimed he was armed with a gun, Detective Dwight Young said.

Other occupants of the home were evacuated while police attempted to communicate with Ryans, who reportedly continued to damage property inside the three-story building, threw items out of various windows and otherwise displayed erratic behavior.

While negotiating with the Delaware State Police’s Conflict Management Team, Ryans moved to a porch where he was stunned and taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m., Young said.

Ryans was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Young said he since has been moved to a mental health facility for evaluation.

While Young said criminal charges are pending, he would not say whether a gun was recovered.
