More than a dozen veterans of the Milford High School soccer program will take the field again for one night this Saturday to play an alumni game in support of this year’s team.

“It’s our primary fund-raiser,” Assistant Coach Ed Evans said. “It gives us a chance to get in touch with those former players who’d like to be out here playing, and hopefully some people want to come down and watch, too.”
The evening will start with a half-hour teachers vs. students game, with the adults’ roster including Principal Tamara Cooper, track coach Czar Bloom, school TV studio director Bruce Leibu, girls’ soccer assistant coach Sonya Eagleston.

“I know some of the kids from school will be interested to see that,” Evans said. “We thought, ‘what’s the incentive for high school kids to come out and watch a bunch of old guys they don’t know?’”

This year’s players are selling tickets until the end of the week as their annual fund-raiser, for $2 a piece. Latecomers can pay $3 at the gate on Saturday.

It’s the soccer team’s second alumni game of the past few years. Evans said he decided to restart the tradition after seeing similar games during his college career, and the recent success of the MHS Alumni Basketball Game.

“We’ve done alumni games before, but we stopped for a while after three or four,” Evans said. “It’s something I’ve taken from my college experience — they try to make it a good family atmosphere, and it’s a good way to keep people together and raise money.”
Money raised at the game will help pay for the team’s varsity jackets and its end-of-season banquet.

Anyone who comes to the game will also get a flyer from Abbott’s Grill allowing them to donate 15 percent of their next check at the Milford restaurant to MHS soccer.
