Hundreds of people traveled from near and far on Thursday, March 19 to witness the grand opening of the new i.g. Burton & Co. dealerships located just north of Milford.

They were drawn by the chance to see the only place in the world where BMW and Mercedes Benz dealerships co-exist under the same roof.

“How could you not appreciate the investment they have put here,” said Milford Mayor Don Marabello. “It’s phenomenal. It shows they have a lot of confidence in this area.”

The ribbon-cutting and reception marked the completion of a project that took six years of negotiations between i.g. Burton & Co. owners and both luxury vehicle companies and planning before construction started six months and three days ago.

The 42,000-foot facility was built by extending the original dealership building on either side. The BMW and Mercedes dealerships each feature the preferred architecture of their respective corporations.

“We spent six years trying to get them to agree on one building,” said I.G. Burton III, who owns the dealership along with his father David Burton and brother Charles Burton. “Once that was done, they had to agree on the design of that building. It was really tough getting to that point. They each have their own way of doing things, and so it was really tricky.”

Charles Burton said he has been anticipating the expansion’s completion.

“It was a long time in the coming,” eh said. “Now we can get back to selling and servicing vehicles.
