1875 James H. Groves of Smyrna was named the first state superintendent of schools.
1949 According to a national survey, the average Delawarean's wages were over $1,600 per year. A family of four's, over $5,292.
1959 A group of 40 women from New Castle met with Governor J. Caleb Boggs in Dover to see if he could stop the integration of Collins Park by the Rayfield's, an African American family. Boggs stood his ground and said there was nothing he could do.
2000 A storm dropped almost 5" of rain on New Castle County as 3 men were rescued from a sinking dredge off Broadkill Beach in 8' waves.
