After qualifying for the state finals with the best time of his career, Milford High School junior Jordan Lingo went one better, setting a new school record for the 500-yard freestyle in the finals race on Saturday afternoon, less than a month after an emergency appendectomy seemed to have sidelined him until next season.

"I wasn't expecting it," he said. "I wasn't expecting anything, honestly. Qualifying in seventh place just blew my mind."

Lingo posted a 4:58.41 time in the 500, the best in MHS history but still only good for eighth place in the race. He also placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle.

"I'm perfectly fine with eighth," he said. "Looking at how I did, I'm completely satisfied."

Lingo was the only member of the boys' team to qualify for a finals match

The girls' team posted a tenth-place finish overall, second highest among downstate schools. Lexi Coon recorded fourth- and sixth-place finishes, while Alyssa Sanders finished sixth in the 50-meter freestyle.

"You can't win everything every day," Morgan McKenzie said. "You just try to do better. Next year, we're going to train really hard, and hopefully be in the top three."
