Raymond G. Rhodes Sr., of Harrington, died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the Veterans Home, Milford. He was 78.

He was born in Long Island, N.Y., to the late Daniel Martin and Margaret Mae Rhodes.

Mr. Rhodes served his country proudly in the U.S. Army. He was a paratrooper during the Korean War with the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, and was a heavy weapons instructor.

He used to work for Edgehill Con-struction Co.

In his spare time, he enjoyed making wood crafts and putting puzzles together.

Mr. Rhodes planted a huge garden every year and always had a bounty of vegetables.

He was quite the poker player and enjoyed playing with friends and family.

Mr. Rhodes will be remembered as having a heart of gold. He would give one the shirt off his back and not think twice about doing it.

He enjoyed being around his grandchildren immensely and gave each and every one of them a nickname that started with the letter “T.”

He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond G. Rhodes Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, “Sis” Emma Rhodes, of Harrington; son, Daniel Martin Rhodes, of Slatington, Pa.; daughters, Barbara Cooper, of Milford and Anna Plummer, of Felton; sister, Gladys Alicastro, of Coral, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 29, 2008, in Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Interment was in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Melvin Funeral Home to help defray funeral expenses.
